Let’s continue our learning about prepositions that tell something about the time.  This time we will learn about using the preposition om.

One way of using om is in sentences that describe something that occurs every time. Here are some examples where you can see that the sentences are for phenomena that occurs periodically.

Norwegian English
Det er varmt om sommeren.
It is warm in the summer.
Det er kaldt om vinteren.
It is cold in the winter.
Snøen smelter om våren.
The snow melts in the spring.
Det blåser ofte om høsten.
It blows often in the autumn.
Jeg er trøtt om morgenen.
I am tired in the mornings.

Om is also used in sentences to indicate something will happen in the future. Below are some examples.

Norwegian English

They are coming in five minutes.
Hun kommer tilbake om en uke.
She is coming back in a week.
Han skal reise om fem dager.
He will travel in five days.
Jeg reiser hjem om ett år.
I am travelling home in a year.

Om is also used in sentences where we are not exactly sure of the time. We want to indicate an approximation or guess the time as can be seen in the following sentences. Notice the s that is added at the end of the noun.

Norwegian English
Han kommer om en ukes tid.
He is coming in a weeks time.
Hun reiser om en fem dagers tid.
She is travelling in five days time.
Vi skal møte om et par timers tid.
We will meet in a couple of hours time.
Det skal bli ferdig om en times tid.
It will be complete in an hours time.
