Let’s continue our learning about prepositions that tell something about the time.  This time we will learn about using the preposition i.

One of the uses of the preposition i is to indicate something that has happened or is happening at this particular time. By time we mean today, yesterday, this year, this summer, etc. Some of the examples below should make things more clear.

Norwegian	English
Jeg er på skolen i dag.	I am at the school today.
Jeg var på skolen i går.	I was at the school yesterday.
Jeg skal på skolen i morgen.	I will attend the school tomorrow.
Han har gått på ski i vinter.	He had gone skiing this winter.
Hun skal reise til India i sommer.	She will travel to India this summer.
Han har arbeidt dårlig i år.	He has worked bad this year.

Another way of using the preposition i is in sentences that indicate something that happened in the past and is no longer happening, something that has happened and is continuing, or something that will happen in the future

1. Something that has happened and continues to happen.

Norwegian	English
Jeg har vært her i fem dager.	I have been here for five days.
Hun har vært hjemme i to dager.	She has been home for two days.
Han har vært på ferie i tre måneder.	He has been on vacation for three months.

2. Something that has happened and is no longer happening.

Norwegian	English
Jeg var der i fem dager.	He was there for five days.
Hun var hjemme i to dager.	She was home for two days.
Han var på ferie i tre måneder.	He was on vacation for three months.

3. Something that will happen in the future.

Norwegian	English
De skal være her i fem dager.	They will be here in five days.
Hun skal være hjemme i to dager.	She will be home in two days.
Han skal ha ferie i tre måneder.	He will have vacation in three months.
