Here are some of the intetkjønn nouns and the different rules of grammar that apply to them.
1. The intetkjønn nouns with just a single vowel do not have an ending in the indefinite, plural form as shown below.
Entall (Singular) | Flertall (Plural)
Ubestemt (Indefinite) | Bestemt (Definite) | Ubestemt (Indefinite) | Bestemt (Definite) |
et hus (a house) | huset | flere hus | husene |

et tak (a roof) | taket | flere tak | takene |

et føll (a foal) | føllet | flere føll | føllene |
* Note that the definite plural form for “barn” is a bit different that it ends with an “a”.
2. Most of the intetkjønn nouns with more than one vowel have an ending in the indefinite plural form as shown below.

et bilde (a picture) | bildet | flere bilder | bildene |
et teppe (a carpet) | teppet | flere tepper | teppene |
3. Many times we can have two nouns that are combined to form a new noun. Such nouns use the gender of the second noun in the combination as shown below. We will learn more about these in later posts.
Entall (Singular) | Flertall (Plural)
Ubestemt (Indefinite) | Bestemt (Definite) | Ubestemt (Indefinite) | Bestemt (Definite) |
et viskelær (an eraser) | viskelæret | flere viskelær | viskelærene |
