Hvem(Who) is used with people. Hva(What) cannot be used with people.
Hvilken/hvilket/hvilke(Which) is used with people and things.
Below are some examples that should make the things clearer.

| Hvem vil du besøke? | Who will you visit? |
| Hvem eier dette huset? | Who owns this house? |
| Hva sier du? | What did you say? |
| Hva tenker du på? | What are you thinking about? |
| Hva vil du gjøre? | What will you do? |
| Hvilken buss skal vi ta? | Which bus shall we take? |
| Hvilken veske liker du? | Which purse do you like? |
| Hvilket hus bor du i? | Which house do you live in? |
| Hvilke bøker liker du? | Which books do you like? |
There is one more type of question that is commonly used in Norwegian, Hva slags (What kind of).
