This is the last post in the series about adverbs in Norwegian. Here we shall learn about some adverbs that depend on whether the verb is causing any “movement” or not. Below examples should help to make things clear.
With Movement | Without Movement |
Han går inn.
He goes in. |
Han er inne.
He is in. |
Han går ut.
He goes out. |
Han er ute.
He is out. |
Han går opp.
He goes up. |
Han er oppe.
He is up. |
Han går ned.
He goes down. |
Han er nede.
He is down. |
Han kommer hit.
He comes here. |
Han er her.
He is here. |
Han går dit.
He goes there. |
Han er der.
He is there. |
Han går hjem.
He goes home. |
Han er hjemme.
He is home. |
I remember these adverbs in such a way:
If there is no movement involved then there is an additional e attached to the adverb like it’s holding back the movement (e.g. inne, ute).
Of course there are some exceptions (her, der).
